Usage and Transport of the Wheelchair on Public Transport

Do not use stair or track mode to enter public transport!

Never use stair or track mode to get on public transport that is not barrier-free! There are many dangers that have not yet been tested. You could get stuck in the gap between the platform and the vehicle or get trapped in the door!

Use the drive mode to enter public transport.

Never switch to drive mode while you are in a moving vehicle

Never use drive mode on public transport while the vehicle is moving. The acceleration and braking can cause the wheelchair to move a great deal and you could injure yourself or bystanders. Always use park or, if necessary, track mode while travelling.

Position yourself in public transportation facing or against the direction of travel

Always position yourself in public transportation facing the direction of travel. Preferably, use the lowered park mode. Thereby, you are in the most stable position and prevent the wheelchair from sliding during a full stop of the vehicle.

Use lowered park mode inside the vehicle

If possible use park mode in the lowered position (see Park Mode) to secure the wheelchair as well as possible in order to prevent it from sliding around accidentally while the vehicle is moving.

Scewo BRO can be used on public transport (train, bus, tram)  provided the means of transport are barrier-free. Please note the following information:

Entering
  • Wait on the platform with enough distance (at least 1m) from the edge, preferably in park mode. In this way, pedestrians cannot cause unwanted movement by touching the wheelchair.

  • If possible, try to keep the wheelchair parallel to the edge of the platform (so that you cannot fall off the platform if you accelerate unintentionally).

  • If possible, ask the staff to wait before continuing the journey. If this is not possible, ask a fellow passenger to hold the door open. This way you will have enough time to position yourself properly inside the vehicle.

  • Go over the threshold of the foot board in drive mode and with a slight run-up. Watch out for pedestrians. Many people are not aware that you have to take a run-up at the threshold of the foot board.

  • Position yourself as follows in the means of transport:

    • Recommended positioning: If the wheelchair space is equipped with a fixed partition wall, position yourself facing against the direction of travel, with your back as close as possible to the partition wall. See image (a) Against the direction of travel. See image (a) Opposite the direction of travel.

    • "If the space does not have a partition wall, position yourself facing the direction of travel with as much space in front of you as possible. See image (b) In the direction of travel.

    • If neither of the above options is possible, because another person in a wheelchair (or a stroller, etc.) requires space, you may, as an exception, position yourself sideways to the direction of travel. However, this is not recommended, as in the event of an emergency stop, the wheelchair could tip over. See image (c) Across the direction of travel.

  • As soon as you have reached the correct positioning, switch to park mode as quickly as possible, before the vehicle continues moving. Always use the lowered park mode. You can activate this by pushing the joystick to the right or left while in park mode. BRO lowers itself slightly until the main wheels touch the ground. This way, the wheelchair will not slide around in the event of an emergency stop.

  • Secure the wheelchair in the vehicle according to the regulations and instructions of the transport operator, if belts or similar equipment are available.

  • Always keep enough distance from fixed objects when entering.

While driving
  • If necessary: to turn around in the vehicle (without activating the drive mode), you can use the maneuvering mode.

  • Never use the drive mode while the vehicle is moving.

Exiting
  • If possible, wait for the staff before continuing the journey. If this is not possible, ask someone else to hold the door open. This way you will have enough time to exit.

  • Only switch to drive mode once the vehicle has come to a complete stop. If the vehicle is still moving, the wheelchair can roll strongly forward or backward.

  • Drive again in drive mode with a slight run-up over the thresholds of the footboards. Pay attention to pedestrians. Many are not aware that you need a bit of momentum to pass over the footboard thresholds.
