Regulatory Basics

As defined by IATA, every airline is obligated to provide a service for the transportation of wheelchairs for people with disabilities. The wheelchair is transported as cargo in the cargo hold or as per the airline's specifications. The wheelchair's battery is considered a 'dangerous good,' and therefore, specific safety requirements apply. Scewo and BRO meet all these requirements, as outlined in the specifications below.

The current guideline on regulation can be found here. The document specifies that there is no limit to the maximum permitted watt-hours of permanently installed lithium batteries carried in the cargo hold .

Booking, Request for Assistance & Registration of an Electric Wheelchair

You can book your flight in the usual way.

After booking, you can register your need for assistance and the electric wheelchair with the airline. The need for support is indicated with various “codes”. You can find the code relevant to you on the airline's website.

  • TIP: If you register a need for assistance, also reserve a container for BRO. This is the safest way of transportation.

Make sure you have the supplement «Technical Data |Wheelchair Transport» with you at all times during your journey. It lists all the relevant technical details for transporting BRO. airport personnel may ask for it.

A sticker is located at the front under the seat plate. This allows you to determine which main battery is installed in your BRO.

Check-In & Departure

Make sure you get to the airport early. You can find the recommended times on the airport websites. We recommend being at the wheelchair meeting point 2–3 hours before the departure time. Your Check-In will be organized at the wheelchair meeting point at the airport.

  • TIP: Attach a label with your contact details to BRO, along with a transparent pouch containing  the supplement “Technical Data | Wheelchair Transport».

To ensure BRO is transported as compact and safely as possible, you should put BRO in park mode first. After that, you can use the remote control mode:

  • Lower and move the seat all the way forward.

  • Fold the foot support backwards.

  • Fold down the back support.

  • If possible, detach and wrap up the control panel for protection.

  • If possible, take loose items such as the seat cushion with you on the plane.

Secure BRO with straps for safe transport on the plane. If available, use the four attachment points. Additional instructions and details on securing cargo can be found in the operating instructions.

The electric wheelchair is usually checked in at the oversized luggage counter at the airport. Afterward, you will be taken to the gate using a transport wheelchair or an airport shuttle. At some airports, you can drive BRO directly to the departure gate. The electric wheelchair is then loaded directly from the gate into the airplane.

For safe transport in the airplane, BRO must be disconnected from the power supply. Carry out the following steps:

  1. Put the wheelchair in standby mode using the control panel.

  2. Turn off the wheelchair completely using the main switch located at the back.

  • TIP: Cover the main switch with adhesive tape to prevent it from being activated during transport.
